Teak Boom

A search for a teak windsurfing boom led me to this beautiful Windsurf International Original Windsurf board and rig. I stumbled across it while keeping an eye on Ontario windsurf classified section of Kijiji. I’m not entirely sure of its age but it must be somewhere in the late 70’s early 80’s. I was interested in acquiring a teak boom, but I think I scored with a wooden extension/universal a wooden center board and gorgeous dacron sail. The sail number has five digits that I believe indicate its early manufacture number. If your interested, here is a great website The Original Windsurfer that gives a detailed timeline and history of the Original Windsurfer.
Driving home from my treasure hunt I had the board, mast and sail slung to the roof, the baby in the back and the boom through the window. The radio was on some smooth jazz and the sun was shining as a classic mustang brought up the rear. I just imagined what the times must have been like back in the day. As for my new gear, I hope to learn more about this antique, like properly rigging it and I’ll definitely take it for a few sails. But that wooden boom and universal will probably end up on the wall sooner then later. I’m stoked to have captured a great piece of windsurfing history and share it with others. Who knows how much longer these classics will be around. Check out the Wind Legends vids below, worth a watch.

  1. i think what you mean is how to tie to the mast..i been saling these for 40 years and still do.! your rope has to have knot tied at very end of it first-very tight…hold knot to mast at the right hight you want your boom…the rope loops round masts 2 times till it comes back round to the knot..then tuck the knot end under the the line that went round mast ….and thred the loose end of line under aswell —so that the knot is samwhiched or sits tight bettween the 2 lines that now rap around the mast….its like a half hitch but the knoted end of the line must be inbetween the to ….pore water on it yank it back and forth and get it realy tight as you can ….then….ofer up the boom line goes through the boom loop on inside of boom..then line comes back around mast ..back through the loop in boom then out to cleat on side of boom wich you will see ….have the boom 90 degrees to mast pull line and pull mast and boom together same time to get as tight as poss ..pull it round to cleat ..your done.!!!! i hope you can understand this ..i know it a bit tricky and a pain..wish i could send you picks..i’ve still got 6 boards 4 booms mint con, mast fotings the lot and still saling them . i’m on uk. this is my num if you want to tex me then i’ll send you pick if your still having trouble. regards. george.

  2. Hi there,

I have recently acquired an original windsurfer that has a wood boom like the one in your pictures. In fact, I think it is the exact same one! I have a different U joint though, its all rubber. Anyways, I have had a hell of a time trying to teach myself how to rig the boom to the mast securely, enough to make it rideable. Have you found any resources on how to do this? Would you be able to share some photos on what your rigging looks like? I am dying to bring back the glory of this board but I don’t think I can get anywhere unless I rig it right.

    Any help would be awesome!
    Thanks,
    Matt

    • Hey Mike,
Great find. These teak booms and original windsurfers are collectors and still fun to sail. Definitely not easy to rig. I’ve tried a couple of different knots on mine and Ill admit I’ve only had mine rigged a handful of times.
This iwindsurf forum http://www.iwindsurf.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20948 has a few good explanations of how how to tie it on. There are many good suggestions but key is to lay the boom parallel to the mast tie on the boom then lower the boom and watch as in the rope tightens. Don’t over tighten bcs you don’t want to damage your fiberglass mast. Ive considered contacting the guys from the original windsurfer website to get proper instructions http://www.originalwindsurfer.com/site/contact.html Im hoping to get it out again some time this summer with friends and family and I’ll post a vid of how I rig the this piece of art.
      Cheers and good luck!
